Ms. Sonn’s Junior English 2/17/2012 Write Semester 2 on a new page in your RLN: You need a Spiral Notebook if you do not already have one. Classroom webpage: I will be here all day today. You must schedule an appointment to make up your vocabulary test. You can also do this if you need support on finishing your eulogy Put it Aside cards / Attendance Agenda. Warm-up Poetry Pre-Assessment Poetry Flood Exit Note Objectives: Students will… Become acquainted with poetry. Collaborate with our peers to define poetry. Explore others poetry and identify what works. Homework: Poetry in your life assignment

Poetry in your life Please note in your homework planner that you must be looking for poetry in your life this weekend and during the first half of next week. Be prepared to share where and how you found poetry in your own life by Friday, February 24. This is on the assignment sheet in the while you were gone folder. And also on the website.

Warm-up: Dead Poets Society In your Reading Log Notebook: Respond to the following: -What is poetry? -How have you come to understand poetry and its purposes? -What should poetry be? This is a philosophical pondering; you are expected to ponder ideas on paper (whether it be in a list, paragraph, or idea web) for the full 6 minutes given.

Pre-Assessment This will not be graded. I want to see what you know, You must do this quietly and in your assigned seat. Please do not ask others to identify terms for you. Please complete this task to the best of your ability. After you complete the final task, please write a reflection concerning the process. Address the following: -What felt challenging? -What felt fun or natural for you? -How did you use space and arrange your final product on the page and why?

Poetry Flood 1. Get into groups. 2. I will give each group a few poems to look at. 3. Read all the poems your group is given. 4. In your reading log notebooks, title your page “Poetry Flood” everyone is responsible for responding to the following: 5. If your poems do not have titles please just use the first line as the title. 6. For each poem, write the title and respond to the following: -What do you notice about these poems? - What do you like? What don’t you like? - How does this poem challenge your current understanding of poetry?

Continued… Now pick one poem that you found most interesting and share it with the group. You must put your poem of choice on the document camera and share and present your response with the class. Your whole group must come to the front. Everyone must speak. Your job as a group is to teach the rest of the class about what you noticed about your poem.

Reading Log Notebook turn-in Group A If your reading log notebook is not ready, then you are responsible for giving it to me by 3:30 today. Bring it to Mrs. Greblo’s Mailbox.

Exit note: Based on your learning today, respond to the following and hand to me on your way out of the door. How has your understanding of poetry changed? Is it still the same, or is it slowly transforming. Explain.
