Preliminaries  Hand in your class work from yesterday.  Complete the Quickwrite activity on p. 463.

Objectives:  The students will be able to read a poem rhythmically.  The students will be able to identify the characteristics of ballads.  The students will be able to identify the characteristics of free verse.

Focus Lesson: “…Birmingham”  Video: Equality – African Americans as cartoon characters and Jim Crow laws  Prereading for the main idea  Class Reading: “Ballad of Birmingham” (p. 464)

Focus Lesson: “The Gift”  Pre-reading for the main idea  Class Reading (p. 469)  Individually or in small groups, complete critical thinking question #10 on p. 471.

Homework: Poetry Project  Complete parts #1 and #2 only of the poetry workshop project (handout).  Due next class (20 project points).
