Learning Outcome(s) At the end of Unit 4 students will be able to: understand the structure and purpose of legends. evaluate a Mexican legend. compose a written review.

Essential Questions The following essential questions will provide a backdrop for the writing project. o Why is strong vocabulary so important in writing? o What are inferences? o How should transition words be used in sentences? o Why are facts and details so important in writing?

En tu propia voz (In your own words) – Escritura (Writing) You are writing a review of the legends “Ixta y Popo” or “El fuego y el tlacuache” for inclusion in the teen section of a catalog to be used by non-Spanish speaking readers who want to know more about aspects of Hispanic literature.

P.A.S.S. PurposeSubject Audience Structure

Your review should: be thorough and balanced help readers decide if material will be useful to them summarize the text discuss positive and negative attributes

Paragraph 1 States the title Main point of the legend Gives reader quick access to information Does not use too many details Discusses positive and negative attributes

Paragraph 2 The writer gives a personal perspective on what was enjoyable about the legend.

Paragraph 3 The writer balances the review by reporting what was bothersome.

Paragraph 4 In the conclusion, the writer explains what the reader will gain from reading the legend, reviewing the positive and the negative

Length of Review Your review should be no longer than 4 paragraphs. The first paragraph should have 5-6 sentences. The 2 nd, 3 rd and 4 th paragraphs should consist of 3-5 sentences.

Antes de escribir (Before writing) Prepare to write your review by brainstorming the purpose of the story its main events ( ), the positive aspects (+), and the negative aspects (-). Be sure to write down the title and author. Before you begin to write, record your ideas on a chart.
