OH&S in SPORT & FITNESS

Group Activity Choose a sporting or fitness activity or service – 1.Brainstorm as many OH&S hazards as you can think of. 2.List the measures that are in place to prevent or control these hazards.

OH&S in SPORT & FITNESS The nature of sporting and fitness activities means that a certain degree of ‘risk taking’ is always present (and sometimes mandatory!) The diversity of the industry also means that there is a wide range of OH&S issues

CASE STUDIES Choose one of the relevant articles provided and report on the following:  Identify all issues / hazards  What procedures or structures are currently in place to protect against these hazards?  Who has responsibilities and what are they?  How could the situation be improved?

STANDARDS AUSTRALIA There is a limited amount of OH&S research & information that relates directly to sport and fitness (we are gradually building on this). This means that codes of practice & standards are not as well developed as in some other industries

STANDARDS AUSTRALIA Refer to the handout: “Australian Standards” and address the following:  Identify some of the standards that may apply to your current or previous workplace  Have you been made aware of the relevant standards through your workplace / employer  Have you ever worked in situations where you feel relevant standards have probably not been met?  Are there any areas within the sporting or fitness industry that you feel require the development and implementation of standards?

Extension Activity Complete Q & A from “Catch a Fire – Practice not Theory” (Fox, 2003)
