Discussion Item: Policy Some organizations and research funders have made it obligatory or mandated depositing scholarly publications in repositories. What are the problems and opportunities for mandating deposit?

Mandates – feasible ? Mandating is difficult (but not impossible) … For universities it is not the first step Only 10% of research is externally funded (let’s start wit that) We need to put incentives in place: –Greater visibility –Explicit marketing strategies –Target opinion leaders

Mandates – how ? Mandates need to sit within a strategy Infrastructure in place Ease of use Service provision Copyright advice (keep copyright with the author) Benefits to researchers need to be clear Esteem Choose small targeted areas, eg: many universities start with PhD theses
