BEYOND GOOGLE AND INTO WEB 2.0 USING ACADEMIC RESEARCH VIA UCONN’S ASSIGNMENT TOOLS & DESTINY, ICONN’S DATABASES, GVRL AND GOOGLE SCHOLAR AND NOODLEBIB (RHS) RESEARCH RESOURCES, Search Strategies and online bibliographic resources

For UCONN’s ECE Students they have the best resources (go to uconn.edu) CLICK on the RESEARCH TAB in the Black Band of the NAVY BLUE BANNER

On the Research Page, go to middle and click on Libraries (hyperlink) on the left

Once you are on the University Libraries Page… Search here Extra tools are in Teaching & Learning Live Reference Help from UCONN

Teaching & Learning Assignment tools has a very useful Assignment Calculator to help you monitor and gage your time

Assignment Tools and Calculator

Example start 1/19 end 1/29 Here is an example of what you might use to calculate your assignment. It hleps you pace your work and progress, in order to finish on time, while covering all you need to include.

Now on to RESOURCES available to RHS DESTINY (online catalog with additional web resources) DESTINY (online catalog with additional web resources) (Note you must log in with your ID and password (rhs) to access additional web resources or access it through ASPEN’s “Quest” tab) UCONN resources (if you are an ECE Student (I will review this with ECE Classes or individuals as needed) “researchIT CT” : formerly ICONN or Connecticut Digital Library (a collection of resources from Biography Databases, to Periodical Databases and ebooks) (NOTE: If accessing from home must type in your CT PUBLIC LIBRARY BARCODE NUMBER) Access has been new link is: GVRL (Gale Virtual Reference Library) or link from Library websiteGale Virtual Reference Library Google Scholar (not your regular google anymore)

DESTINY without logged in access

DESTINY with logged in access

Destiny WEB SITES TAB (logged in)

Access from within ASPEN using QUEST

Results of Search within QUEST inside ASPEN for “Shakespeare Globe Theater”

NEW Former ICONN Website now called: “researchIT CT”

USING ICONN or UCONN or Library Databases Example of search: In GVRL, Library Ebook Ref NOTE: Full Text, Content type, etc.

Formerly called “ICONN” or Connecticut Digital Library, now called “researchIT CT” From the new “researchIT CT’ website, click on the link “for High Schools” As of Feb.1, 2016, will cease and the new web address will be: earchitct.org

or after Feb. 1, 2016 “ Here you will find links to many useful resources … For something like Shakespeare you would find information in both Biography resources and in EXPLORA or other choices

Using Ebsco and many of CT Resources Before starting into your search, you may want to create an account using Upper Right Hand Corner where it says “Sign In” NOTE: The next few slides show some of this, but in addition, on the RHS Library wikispace home page, there is a link to the EBSCO “how to do research” Video. This has tips on how to use the folders as well as search and save info.

Create an account to store your searches, citations, articles, images, etc. Click Create a new Account if you have not set up one yet… once you set it up, you can just enter your User name and password, recommend using your ID or something you will remember

With an Account you get an online folder to store online what you have searched and want to use For example here I have 2 articles, 2 images and some other items

If you click to CITE, then choose MLA format unless otherwise instructed Note if you are using a program such as RefWorks from UCONN for ECE, see yellow export info Choose the format Then, copy and paste citation to notes

Using Explora Explora is by same company so if you switch databases or search resources, you can log in and save to same folder as the other resources

GVRL (Gale Virtual Reference Library) NOW GVRL able to connect to save to your own GOOGLE DRIVE

Use GOOGLE SCHOLAR instead of other search engines

If you are an ECE Student you can use Inside RefWorks, you can do all your research, saving, bibliography, etc.

NOODLETOOLS If you are an RHS Student, you have access to creating your own account and online storage and work space in NOODLETOOLS to keep notes, save citations and bibliography, etc. On the Wikispaces page, there is a link to a short PowerPoint explaining, step by step how to set up the Noodletools personal account.

RHS LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER PAGE and the Wikispaces page has links to the resources Links to DESTINY, GVRL and ICONN/”researchIT CT”
