CORRECT NAME OF THE CAREER Epidemiologist

EDUCATION AND/ OR TRAINING REQUIRED Important skills should include problem solving, patience, and being able to conduct research. Recommended high school courses should include mathematics, biology, chemistry, anatomy, and history. In order to become an epidemiologist, you must first receive a high school diploma. Then, a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, or another related field. Finally, you must at least receive a master’s degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, or public health. Postgraduate study is required as listed above.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DAILY ACTIVITIES Epidemiologists look at large outbreaks of illnesses and diseases trying to find out how the epidemic started. The research how diseases can be prevented and they find out what makes a disease more likely to develop. They gather data from different groups of people and find the similarities and differences in the data. There are senior epidemiologists which require another 4 years of college to receive a PhD. Epidemiologists work in hospitals, colleges, and private clinics. They work for the government or themselves.

SALARY RANGE The salary range for an epidemiologist in Kentucky is between $56,707 and $103,645. The range listed above is for Owensboro, KY. Experience and education can influence salary.

SELF- REFLECTION I had not heard of this career before. One positive thing about this career is that you would get to find out the causes of epidemics that occur around the world. One negative thing about this career is that you would have to know all of the startling statistics of the deaths happening from diseases and illnesses. I would like to have this job. I would want to have this job because I think it would be cool to find out how diseases were spread in epidemics and how they started in the first place.
