Requirement DIVA – GIS Data Files Knowledge of shapefile.

Create Shapefile from datafiles : Problem Problem : You have some data files for which you have to create a shapefile. But you have no image and no co-ordinates. By data-files we mean a set of data i.e dataset. As for example precipitation data of some places

Create Shapefile from datafiles : Solution Data files are in the format of Year,place and its corresponding precipitations. You have no co-ordinates The task is to convert these dataset into a shape file

Open DIVA-GIS Click on Data > Draw Shape Select Polygon in the ‘Shape Tool’ dialog box. Draw a rectangle Let the rectangle represent the place whose co-ordinate you do not know Create Shapefile from datafiles : Solution(Step – 1) See Fig : 1Fig : 1

Imagine that all the places fall inside this rectangle Divide the rectangle into 4 quarters and think the imaginative position of the places. If place A lies north of place B then follow this arrangement in the rectangle also. Create Shapefile from datafiles : Solution(Step – 2) See Fig : 2Fig : 2
