 Twain was a humorist – but sometimes the humor vanished, and the result were ugly, bitter comments about the human race, such as Sherburn’s speech.
 Jim is pining for his family, and Huck seems surprised, which indicates he still doesn’t think of Jim as quite human, even if he is friends with Jim.

Summary Huck and the King decide to arrive in a steamboat to the village and when they arrive they meet a townsman who shares all the town gossip and happenings to the two. They Peter Wilkis, a wealthy man, asked for his two brothers before his passing, but they have not yet arrived and Wilkis passed. Peter Wilkis has 3 nieces who all have inherited his wealth and happen to be in town. The king and duke deviate a plan to play the part of the two uncles so they can get their hands on the money. The nieces fall for their plot because they have no past recollection of their uncles. To gain trust of the townspeople, the king and duke decide to publicly give the inheritance to the girls, but Dr. Robinson, someone in the crowd, catches suspicion of their acts and calls them out. Later, Huck feels guilty that the two con men have a plan to rob the girls, who trust them. He makes his own plan to steal the money and hide it until they leave so he can later reveal the hiding place in a letter to Mary Jane.

Huck’s Development or Lesson Lesson: Not to trust everyone you meet Evidence: “I stood behind the king and the duke's chairs and waited on them… Susan said how bad the biscuits was, and how mean the preserves was...the way women always do for to force out compliments; and the people all knowed everything was tiptop, and said so—said ‘How DO you get biscuits to brown so nice?” (Twain 129). ● Huck notices how the girls and nearly everyone in the house lie about the simplest things.

Huck’s Development or lesson Lesson: Money isn't everything Evidence: “I felt so ornery and low down and mean that I says to myself,my mind’s made up ; I’ll hive that money for them or bust” (Twain 132). ● The feeling of Huck taking the money is worse than his desire to have it

Evidence that shows the lesson Lesson: He learns how deceitful people could be Evidence: “I says to myself, this is a girl that I'm letting that old reptle rob her of her money” (Twain 132). It shows how the king will do anything to get money He came up a big lie

3 Style/Literary Analyses Theme: people are gullible and ignorant King’s speech in chapter 25 “And everybody crowded up with the tears in their eyes, and most shook the hands off of them frauds” (Twain 236). Diction: use of words that aren’t “conventional” now or have odd spellings “‘Git aboard,’ says the king. ‘...my servant ‘ll he’p you with them bags. Jump out and he’p the gentleman’” (Twain 223). ● Imagery: Although Huck is not very educated he still describes places or events in detail ○ “-it was a long curtain-calico gown, and a white horse-hair wig and whiskers; and then he took his theater paint and painted Jim's face and hands and ears and neck all over a dead, dull solid blue, like a man that's been drownded nine days.”
