Note-taking Skills

Why do we have to take notes? u To help you identify the main, important ideas in the lecture u To help you learn and remember the material for later u To have a record of information that may not be available anywhere else

Why do we have to take notes? u To keep track of information your teacher (the same person who makes your exams) considers important u To help you complete class assignments and homework u To clarify for you the purpose of the lecture

Taking Notes in Class u It is important to know what to do… l before the lecture l during the lecture l after the lecture

Before the Lecture... u Check the sideboard for the agenda for the day u Review any notes from the previous lecture u Complete any assignments

Before the Lecture... u Have notes/paper and writing utensils ready u Sit in your assigned seat (where you will be able to avoid distractions) u Be prepared to listen and actively participate

During the Lecture... u Listen attentively u Write down the missing words on your note packet u Jot down examples that support the main ideas u Summarize (if needed) what is said in your own words

During the Lecture... u Use abbreviations and short- hands as often as possible u Ask questions! u Answer questions! u Listen for what is emphasized or repeated (that means its probably important!!)

During the Lecture... u Make sure to copy down anything the teacher writes on the board u Write in an organized, orderly, and concise manner

After the Lecture... u REVIEW your notes, in order to keep your memory fresh! u Underline or highlight main ideas, concepts, and information

After the Lecture... u Seek answers to any remaining questions u Converse with your peers about new material

Remember! u Be PREPARED! u Participate constructively! u Ask questions if unsure! u Complete assignments and turn them in!

Remember! u It is better to take too many notes than too few! u Taking ten minutes to review after each class will save you lots of time later when completing homework or studying for tests!

Notetaking Skills u “In addition to attending class, it is important to brush up on your note- taking skills to really achieve optimum success.” l Kiran Misra, Edinboro University

REVIEW! u Research indicates that 80% of new material can be recalled if you review notes within the first 24 hours of presentation.

EFFECTIVE STUDY u I. The key to effective study is: CONSISTENCY u II. Consistency is dependent upon planning: l Keep a weekly calendar l Set a study time you can adhere to daily l Plan to work in the same place each evening

EFFECTIVE STUDY l Work at a desk or table l Have good lighting l NO TV, Radio, Stereo, etc l Do something each evening u III. Study Plan l P = Preview; read the bold print, pictures, graphs, etc.

EFFECTIVE STUDY l Q = Question; read chapter questions, vocabulary, and teacher worksheets two or three times l R = Read; read the given selections, and note familiar passages l S = Study; go over chapter questions and worksheets. Review class notes l T = Test yourself; don’t wait for a formal test to discover you don’t know an answer

EFFECTIVE STUDY u Keep a Notebook for every class: l Keep them neat l Update your notebook daily l Use ink l Place corrected papers and/or handouts in your notebook (in the back)

Study Hard, and make it count! YOU Only YOU are responsible for your grade!!!!
