mAIN vERBS aND hELPING vERBS A verb that is made up of more than one word is called a verb phrase. It contains a main verb and helping verb or verbs. The main verb expresses action or being in the sentence. The helping verbs work with the main verbs but do not show action. Ex: Grayce has arrived at the party. Sometimes there can be more than one helping verb or main verb. E x: The door has been locked and shut.
