How to Stop a Bully

Bullying hurts, it’s ok to cry. It hurts to have someone be mean to you. So go ahead and cry it out, but then learn how to handle bullying. There are techniques that will help you learn not to internalize the hurtful words. Remember - bullying is more about the bully than the victim.

1 st Identify bad behavior! Make sure someone knows their behavior is hurting you and it is not cool. Just say, “hey, that hurts when you say that”. Most bullies feel that bullying is fun and makes them look cool and that it is not really harming anyone. It is important you let someone know when they have crossed the line and that they are being mean and not funny.

Don’t whisper or spread rumors.

Don’t pass notes It may be an innocent message, but notes can make others feel bad, besides that kind of behavior interrupts learning.

Avoid using mean words. They hurt all of us.

Who gets targeted? Kids that get bullied the most are seen as “whiners” and “complainer”. Don’t be a “pick on me” kid. Learn to tolerate others. Look for solutions to problems don’t just complain.

What not to do with a bully Don’t retaliate. Do not react with the same emotions. That will get you into trouble.

Learn ways to respond to a bully Respond to a bully by using a neutral response such as: “Hmm, so that’s how you see it.” “It’s good to know you feel that way.” “Thanks for letting me know.” “Is that really how you feel”?

You deserve to feel safe about being yourself at school.

If you feel bullied and can’t tell an adult, tell a friend.

When an adult is needed. If the bullying is extreme that is always a time for an adult to step in! Anytime violence occurs or is possible you need to speak out! If you are afraid tell a friend. If you know of an extreme case tell someone.

I do not tolerate bad behavior.

Practicing Positive Behavior I want you to feel safe in my classroom. Together, we are a community. We are all important. We won’t have time for bad behavior. There will be a lot of things for us to celebrate throughout the year. So let’s get started…

Here’s to a great year! Welcome to room 104.
