Multiply real numbers. Divide real numbers. Objectives

When you multiply or divide two numbers, the signs of the numbers determine whether the result is positive or negative. NumbersProduct/Quotient Both positivePositive One positiveNegative Both negativePositive

Find the value of each expression. –5–5 The product of two numbers with different signs is negative. Additional Example 1: Multiplying and Dividing Signed Numbers A. 12 The quotient of two numbers with the same sign is positive. B.

Find the value of the expression. The quotient of two numbers with different signs is negative. Multiply. = –2 C. Additional Example 1: Multiplying and Dividing Signed Numbers

Find the value of each expression. –7–7 The quotient of two numbers with different signs is negative. Check It Out! Example 1a and 1b 35  (–5) 44 The product of two numbers with the same sign is positive. –11(–4)

Find the value of each expression. Check It Out! Example 1c –6(7) = – 42 The product of two numbers with different signs is negative.

Two numbers are reciprocals if their product is 1. A number and its reciprocal are called multiplicative inverses.

Because multiplying by 1 does not change a number’s value, 1 is the multiplicative identity. Two numbers are multiplicative inverses if their product is the multiplicative identity. Helpful Hint Dividing by a nonzero number is the same as Multiplying by the reciprocal of the number.

You can write the reciprocal of a number by switching the numerator and denominator. A number written without a denominator has a denominator has a denominator of 1. Helpful Hint

Example 2 Dividing by Fractions Additional Example 2A: Dividing by Fractions Divide. To divide by, multiply by. Multiply the numerators and multiply the denominators. and have the same sign, so the quotient is positive.
