Pedagogical use of tablet computers to enhance the quality of teaching and learning of Grade 10 Life Sciences Presented at the NADEOSA Conference, June 2014: University of Pretoria Rafiki, M & Mhlanga, E.

Value of ICTs in Teaching and Learning Increasing use of ICTs in teaching and learning Children who use computers found to show greater gains in problem solving skills (Leslie & Dora, 2010) Wilson, et al (2013) – integrating technology in the classroom enables learners to become self-regulated and empowers them to manage their own learning.

Focus of paper In SA several studies done on the use of technology – Apple Classroom of Tomorrow (ACOT, 1996) concluded that technology-enhanced learning environments shift learning from: - teacher to learner –centred learning - individual to collaborative work - passive to active learning The current study explores the experiences of teachers and learners in two schools in Gauteng in integrating iPads in teaching and learning of Life Sciences

Focus of paper The study looks at: - how teachers and learners use iPads (pedagogical shifts) - what benefits are derived out of using such technology - Challenges faced

Theoretical Framework From literature reviewed, study distils a theoretical framework with three related constructs: - Technological Knowledge - Pedagogical Knowledge - Content Knowledge Understanding relevant technology, pedagogy and subject content (TPC) is a key factor to successful integration of technology TPC will in turn affect other important variables like attitudes, mode of integration and learner interactions
