Once upon a time, there was a quiet village. It was peaceful. Villagers who were living in the village were friendly. Villagers said hello to each other. Hello!Hi!

In the street, some children were playing football. Some were chatting. They all lived there happily. Yay!!!!!

In the forest, there was a horrifying monster called Nian. It has yellow skin, a huge mouth and two green eyes. It woke up in winter and started to eat plants and animals, like pigs, sheep, cows, etc. I’ll eat all of you!!!

Monster Nian went to the village. Villagers were frightened as Monster Nian would eat them all so they ran away quickly. The village head had no idea to scare it away. Quick! Run!!!! Ahhhh!!!

One day, the village head wore red clothes and had lunch. When he went home, he met Monster Nian. He thought Monster Nian would eat him but it ran away. The village head knew Nian was afraid of red at that moment. And he told the villagers to stick red paper. Ahh!!!

The next few days, the villagers became brave. They lit firecrackers and beat the drum. And Monster Nian felt scared so he ran away and never returned. Noooo!!

Now, we still stick red paper, beat the drum, light firecrackers and give red packets at Chinese New Year. Happy New Year!!! You too!!
