Department of Information Technology OPEN ACCESS MATERIALS FOR DUT

SELF DEVELOPED VS PROPRIETARY SELF: Tailor made Flexible Specific PROPRIETARY: Predefined General Generally more than required

SELF Time consuming but adaptable and improvable Expertise required although the teacher is the expert Cost effective teacher develops as part of WL Access in following years without cost implications Flexible – able to adapt to changes in academic calendar

PROPRIETARY Quick Integration can be very time consuming Comprehensive but difficult to “cut to size” Student access control – students must be responsible about login information Students can self monitor

PROPRIETARY Licensing only for 1 year, students who fail? Training required for tutors – difficult to orchestrate before lectures start Requires specific lab preparation- approval process can be time consuming Student access control – students must be responsible about login information

Assessments?

CONCLUSIONS If you can, do it in house – be aware of copyright If you can’t ensure licensing, content and support is sorted out before embarking on it. Always have a backup plan when implementing an online test.
