A TRUE WEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE ATOMIC BOMBS

1.The Manhattan project began on Dec. 9, 1938 when 2 German scientists in Los Alamos, NM split the atom- the project- cost $2BB. 2.On July 16, 1945 the test bomb was detonated in the NM desert. 3.On July 24, the Air Force was given custody of the other 2 bombs.

J. Robert Oppenheimer and Gen Leslie Groves

4.President Harry Truman had decided that unless Japan surrendered, the U.S. would use the atomic bombs. (This decision was made over a land invasion of Japan. Estimates range as high as 1MM casualties if this had been carried out.) 5.The target cities: Kokura, Hiroshima, Nigata and Kyoto.

6.Col. Paul Tibbets and his crew were selected for the first attack; their plane was the Enola Gay. a.On August 6, 2:45 AM the plane took off from the island of Tinian, then the crew was informed of its mission. b.At 8:15 AM the bomb was released over Hiroshima-43 seconds later the bomb was detonated and exploded 1850 feet above ground.

7.The heat rays measured 3000’ C. Anyone within 2 miles received primary burns. 62% of the city was destroyed and 71,000 killed, 68,000 injured. (Those near ground zero were literally vaporized while others suffered radiation poisoning)

8.Kokura was the next target, and Bock’s Car took off at 3:49AM on August 9. The city was covered by clouds so they had to choose another target-Nagasaki. The plane only had enough fuel for 1 run. a.44% of the city was destroyed, 40,000 killed. b. Some Japanese leaders did not want to surrender even then.

9.August 15 Emperor Hirohito addressed his nation. 10.Sept. 2-the formal surrender was signed aboard the U.S.S. Missouri.

VITAL STATISTICS 11.The first bomb was named Little Boy for FDR. Weight-8,000 lbs. (9’9” and 12.5 kilotons power of TNT) 12.2nd bomb-Fat Man named for Winston Churchill; 9000 lbs ; (11’4” and 22 kilotons power of TNT.) 13.The blast of the 2nd bomb caused broken windows 125 miles away.

Firebombing of Japan
