Websites youtube.com (helix wind turbine) howstuffworks.com (Building the future: Oceanic Wind Turbines) modified Bob Dylan’s song “Blowin’ in the Wind” (1 st wind farm) JayLeno’sGarageboingboing.net (Jay’s wind turbine)

Lesson 1 View story powerpoint or read book. Play vocabulary games.

Lesson 2 Machine Charades (page 61 in teachers book) Stations Bring in guest speakers affiliated with mechanical engineering. Contact Dawn Walker to assist with schedules.

Lesson 3 View charts and examples from “Catching the Wind” powerpoint. Helpful hint: To encourage unique designs put the raft and track testing station out of view from building area. Remember to use higher order (Bloom’s) questioning. Ex: Explain why the sails are not catching enough wind?

Lesson 4 Do not use milk cartons! Must use juice or soy because of Health Department requirements. Must measure 5 cm from the top of juice carton. The holes must precisely align, or the driveshaft will not spin correctly. Caution the students to treat the balls with care because they will break down quickly.
