Lighting layout DIY Several design scenarios – Stationary object and camera – One person to document EACH scenario on paper – Another person to photograph – The rest are helping with lights Try 5-6 different light sources Try 5-6 different light locations Try a few different light intensities Try spreading or reflecting light
try adjusting different variables Light sources – Candle light, incandescent (omni-directional and directional), fluorescent circle and linear, LED circle and linear, daylight (use the back of the room) Use different numbers of each 1, 2, and 3 point lights; 1, 2, and 3 linear lights, daylight, and any combo Use reflectors, lenses to direct or diffuse lights – change background from dark to light – bounce light off something first – shield the light to control glare – spread the light with “spread lens” (tracing paper)
Create and document the following lighting scenarios Someone’s face Sculpture Photo in frame Wall wash Computer with drawing next to you Dinner setting for 2 Shiny object
Document each variation Plan, elevations Dimension viewer, view-ee, light location Indicate light source type, wattage Indicate reflectors, spread-lenses and the like Photograph for each variation Light level on object in FC (if possible)
Note the following evaluate strengths and weakness of each configuration identify the best configuration glare level for viewer and object light balance across surface shadow depth and dimension color appearance of object and light source
