The Three Asian Musketeers
D EFINITION A bar graph is a graph that displays data using bars of different heights Someone would use this when they have to compare relative sizes of different sets of data They are best for comparing categories rather than individual data groups
E XAMPLE Bar graphs can be used to compare the number of people who like a certain type of movie to those that like another type of movie.
D ATA R EQUIREMENTS Bar graphs are used for single sets of data or multiple sets within the same category. The data needs different categories Bar Graphs typically use categorical data
A R EAL L IFE S ITUATION A bar graph can be used to compare how many people are from different cultural backgrounds in Honors Algebra
Q UESTION If another student were to join the population, what would be the probability of the student being Caucasian? 4/23 or 17%
P ROS AND C ONS Advantages: Information is easy to compare, easy to create, is useful for categories of data, is helpful in quickly predicting probability, and can compare multiple data sets. Disadvantages: Can’t be used to solve linear equations, not efficient for large ranges of data, and not good for large quantities of categories
