Why do people migrate? Types of migrants? Economic migrants: those who are pulled by higher living standards in another country Internally displaced persons (IDP): those who are displaced from home but stay internal to their country of origin Refugees: those who are pushed out of their country by war, political conflict, or natural disaster and are granted asylum elsewhere Victims of human trafficking

What can your Model UN states do? Recommend changes to individual state policies on migration (ratify the Int’l Convention – next slide) Support the United Nations High Commission for Refugees ( or IOM ( Support non-governmental organizations, such as World Vision, CARE, or Catholic Relief Services Support UN efforts to help refugees in specific conflicts Support UN efforts against Trafficking in Persons
