Test Taking Helpful Hints Types of Tests –True/False –Multiple Choice –Matching –Fill in/Short Answer

TRUE/FALSE True/False tests give a statement and ask you to decide whether the statement is true or false. If any part of the statement is false then the answer is false. 1.Go with your first hunch unless you are certain you made a mistake. 2.Beware of statements with words like all, always, never, or only. 3.The words usually, likely, often and frequently are more likely to indicate a true statement.

Multiple Choice Multiple Choice questions ask you to choose the correct answer from a list of possibilities. 1. Read the entire question 2. Try to think of the answer before you look at the choices. 3. Read all choices even if you are certain you have found the correct answer. 4. If you aren’t sure which is correct, cross out the choices you know are wrong. Then make your best guess.

Matching A matching section usually gives you two lists and asks you to pair up the information. 1.Match the pairs you are sure of first. 2.Cross off what you have used. 3.Guess as best you can on the others, don’t leave blanks.

Fill in/Short Answer Fill in the blanks give you a sentence and ask you to fill in a missing word. Short answers ask you to respond with a few sentences in your own words. 1.Read each question completely, don’t rush. 2.Watch for directions – sometimes in order to get credit you must write in complete sentences.
