Objective: The students will be able to evaluate to what extent Americans resisted initiatives for democracy and inclusion by analyzing the responses of American citizens toward minority populations in the United States AP Essential Questions What were the causes of Americans’ resistance to initiatives for democracy and inclusion in the period ? 1824 Election map due today. Presidential Election Chart 1804, 1808, 1812, 1816 due on Wednesday

“I have seen the Indian in his forests and the Negro in his chains, and thought, as I contemplated their pitiable condition, that I saw the very extreme of human wretchedness; but I did not then know the condition of unfortunate Ireland” an early 19 th century French traveler

Students will analyze data to make predictions about who is coming to the United States and how those impacts are affecting the U.S. 1. Identify trends in both data sets. 2. What message is this data sending? How do you know that?

We will analyze a primary source as a group to model the expectations for the groups as they will read and analyze their own source.

In your student groups, you will be assigned one primary source to analyze and report out to the class by identifying the message of the author. As you listen to the other groups report out, prepare to ask 1 question of the group that is reporting out. This may be a clarifying question or a follow-up question.
