English II—March 3, 2015 Bell work: What might be the similarities and differences between narrative prose and narrative poetry? Homework: – Independent Reading Project due Friday. – Study for Lesson #6 Vocabulary on Monday. – Narrative Poem Writing Prompt (unless you finish in class).

“Woman with Kite” and “Grape Sherbet” 1. What is the point of view in the poem? 2. Who is the speaker? 3. What is the basic situation? 4. What is the poem’s setting? 5. What is/are the conflicts in the poem? 6. What kind(s) of imagery do you see the most often in the poem? Try to list an example for all five senses. 7. What other sound devices (alliteration, assonance, onomatopoeia) have been included by the poet? Give examples. 8. What figures of speech are included (metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole)? Give examples. 9. What is the mood of this poem? Explain your answer. 10. What is the author’s tone (his or her attitude toward the subject)? 11. Identify words which have a connotative meaning which help to clarify the author’s tone. Explain each example. 12. Explain the significance of the poem’s title. 13. Summarize each stanza of the poem. 14. What is theme of this poem? 15. What is the author’s purpose in writing this poem?

Narrative Poem Writing Prompt Revisit the narratives you have read or the memoir you’ve been writing and select one to turn into a narrative poem. Be sure to: – Tell a story (poem should have a sequence of events, characters, and conflict). – Use vivid details and imagery. – Intentionally use punctuation to create a stylistic effect.
