Daily Recommendation Total Carbohydrates Based on a 2000 calorie diet  45%-65% should be carbs  grams a day  900-1,300 calories a day Excess amounts are stored as fats

Where does it come from? Natural Sugars  Fruit (fructose)  Milk (lactose)  Yogurt  Grains  Vegetables Unnatural Sugars  Drinks  Sweeteners  Anything Processed

Effects of Excess Sugar Can lead to:  Weight Gain  Diabetes  Impaired Immune System  Chronic Disease  Rotting and Infection of Teeth

Sugars Effect on Teeth Sugar causes bacteria to produce the acid that damages your teeth. Plaque develops constantly but you clean it off when you brush your teeth Don’t brush regularly, bacteria gather and produce more acid which can then create a hole in the enamel and eventually lead to cavities. Cause changes in bite Reduces size of back teeth and can eventually result in loss all together

How Your Body Breaks Down Sugars Mouth and Stomach  Amylase breaks down sugar into small particles  Once in stomach acids continue to break apart sugar molecule into smaller pieces Intestines  Majority of sugar digestion occurs here  Enzymes along the lining of the small intestines break down sugars into monosaccharide's, which are absorbed into the blood as glucose and used for energy  Large intestines is responsible for cleaning up any leftovers and getting rid of waste
