DETAILED CLASS ANALYSIS OF MUSIC MAGAZINE ONE NME ANALYSE THE FRONT COVER, CONTENTS PAGE AND DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD OF MAGAZINE 1 (NME DIZZEE RASCAL EDITION, SEPT 2009)

Front Cover Main Image Flash Masthead Main cover line Pull Quote Date/Barcode/PriceFooter Header Left Third The masthead normally is in the top left corner of the page, this is because of when these magazines are on the shelf we want to be able to see the name of the magazine and what the magazine is. The masthead is normally big and bold and take up most of the page because they want to catch the audiences attention. The red in the ‘NME’ connotes that there's new news because in news papers they use red to show up to date information. The flash is to promote an offer or something that would appeal to the audience. The main image is in the centre of the page so it appeals to the audience, this image is a really fun and joyful image, it shows a lot of positive emotions. Most of the things on this page are on the left because when people look at a magazine they are always attracted to the left side where there is the main parts, the mast head, image and quotes. The + sign in the footer suggests that’s there's more in the magazine including everything that Is on the cover of the magazine and more. The barcode is small which suggests that people don’t look at the price of the magazine they are more interested in the contents and what's on the cover rather than the price. The pull quote represents the image and connotes what the image is trying to say, because the image is lively and fun he shows that he is spreading his vibe to everyone because everyone can see that emotion on the front cover clearly. The main cover line that stands out more than the other cover lines. The header includes more information on the magazine and includes words that will appeal to the audience such as ‘special’ this will attract the audiences attention because it is a sense of something unique and exciting within the magazine.

Audience Who is the target audience for the NME? The target audience for the NME magazine are the people who have an interest in indie music. The NME includes more artists and genres as alternatives on the cover page of the magazine. How does the NME attract it’s audience? The NME attracts the audience by, having a big red name, because it attracts the audience. The NME stands for New Music Express, which appeals to the audience because it suggests that it has the latest music and latest bands information. The NME also promotes tickets and gives out tickets for festivals in their magazines.

Contents Page Masthead/Contents Band Index Main Image Drop Cap Copy/Editorial Subscription Box Contents/Headings/Subheadings The band index is a long list which suggests that there is a lot of information within the magazine. The main image is in the middle, to focus the image. The image is in like a suitcase which shows the element of transport. Drop cap can vary on how many lines they drop down. This one drops down 7 lines. This is used to start of a paragraph. They promote other advertisements in their magazine. The contents and headings show different topics within the magazine, they start off with capitals and then the sub topics within them are in lower case, this can be used to attract the audience to attract there interest in some of the contents in there magazine. Magazines always have the mast head on each page to promote the magazine and keep the theme the same. The contents is in bold as well this is to show the reader that it is the contents page. A quick introduction and information on the pages and magazines, and they have references to the pages in the magazine if the reader is interested.

Double Page Spread The image shows that the guy is rebellious and is doing graffiti. He looks as if he is doing it secretly and it looks like he is looking to see if anyone is looking. The image represents him as a ‘gangster’ type. The title ‘From Tags To Riches’ May suggest that there are people who are rich and who used to be one of the gangster type that are now rich but still do the same as before. i.e. graffiti.

What makes up a magazine cover Things that make up a magazine are the mast head, quote line and the main image. This is because they are mostly always on the left side which readers look at first the most and they make up the page, the rest of the things are included but are not as big as these 3 things that connect. These 3 are essential to have on the front cover of a magazine.
