Main idea: Detail: An archaeologist studies objects to discover clues from the past. Artifacts are examined and dated, and compared to other objects found. A “dig” (or site) can take many years to excavate! Archaeologists work long hours to dig, dust off, and excavate artifacts. Archaeologists can learn about ancient customs and beliefs by studying artifacts.

Summary: An archaeologist uses many utensils to excavate a site; artifacts found are closely examined and are used to make predictions about ancient societies.
