  Homer is the author of the Iliad and the odyssey and is revered as the greatest of ancient Greek epic poets.  Homer was seen as a poetic chronicler. (someone who writes accounts of important or historical events)  Homer is better viewed as a myth  Nothing was know for certain about the authorship of the Iliad or the date and place of composition.  There were numerous authors who contributed to the Iliad and Greeks all agreed on the name Homer, the myth said that Homer was blind and some myths say that homer was an eye witness of some of the events in the Iliad. Homer the Myth

  Over the years different Greeks added to the books in the Iliad.  People say the people who wrote the Iliad were different to the people who wrote the Odyssey.  There is another Myth that Homer was an oral poet and he had a scribe that wrote down the Iliad for him.  The myth of Homers name comes from the Greek word omeros which means beggar which he named himself when he was thrown out of a bar. Homer the Myth

  Homer was believed to be born sometime between the 8 th and 9 th BC.  There has been a lot of dispute between the birthplace of Homer.  Not much was known about ‘Homer the man’ due to it being myth made up by a bunch of Greek poets.  Plato tells us that in his time many believed that Homer was the educator of all of Greece.  The Iliad and the Odyssey are seen to be different because the Iliad was created in his youth and the Odyssey was created in his old age.  Seven cities lay claim to Homer as their native son because he was seen as a national figure. Homer the Man
