The Resource Room Miss Jen Broeker Resource Teacher

What is a Resource Teacher? A special education teacher who works with small groups and individual students with learning disabilities and/or behavior disorders.

How Does a Child Get Into Resource? Any child with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is seen. Their needs specified on the IEP determine how much time they are seen per week by the resource teacher. Any time slots open after that are used to service children who may be referred for an IEP evaluation in the near future. Another way a child may be serviced by the resource teacher is if both the parent (guardian) and the classroom teacher think the child needs resource services, beyond what can be done for the child in the classroom. However, several interventions must have been tried prior to this point.

What Do Students Work on in Resource? Reading –Building fluency, comprehension, and word decoding. Math –Mastering basic facts, breaking down multi-step problems, and reading word problems. Writing –Building the length of written work, organization, and grammatical skills. Social Skills –Working on day-to-day conversation skills and how to interact with peers in an appropriate manner. Test Taking Strategies –How to eliminate answers, correctly read questions, and learn to advocate for yourself.
