Potential Change in STAR State Superintendent Tom Torklakson is recommending that STAR assessments not required for Federal Accountability purposes be suspended during the school year.

9 Ways CCSS Will Change Curriculum MATHEMATICS 1.Greater Focus 2.Coherence 3.Skills, Understanding, and Application 4.Emphasis on Practices ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS 1.More Nonfiction 2.Focus on Evidence 3.“Staircase” of Test Complexity 4.Speaking and Listening 5.Literacy in the Content Areas

Examples of Common Core Changes Classrooms and Instruction Greater Infusion Of Technology More Use Of Productive Group Work Noisier Classrooms Project Based Learning Greater Focus On Critical Thinking

EMBEDDING 21 ST CENTURY SKILLS

Core Subjects & 21st Century Themes Core subjects include English, reading or language arts, world languages, arts, mathematics, economics, science, geography, history, government and civics. Schools must promote an understanding of academic content at much higher levels by weaving 21st century interdisciplinary themes into core subjects: Global Awareness Financial, Economic, Business and Entrepreneurial Literacy Civic Literacy Health Literacy Environmental Literacy

Learning and Innovation Skills Learning and innovation skills are what separate students who are prepared for increasingly complex life and work environments in today’s world and those who are not. They include: Creativity and Innovation Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Communication and Collaboration

Information, Media and Technology Skills Today, we live in a technology and media-driven environment, marked by access to an abundance of information, rapid changes in technology tools and the ability to collaborate and make individual contributions on an unprecedented scale. Effective citizens and workers must be able to exhibit a range of functional and critical thinking skills, such as: Information Literacy Media Literacy Information, Communications and Technology Literacy

Life and Career Skills Today’s life and work environments require far more than thinking skills and content knowledge. The ability to navigate the complex life and work environments in the globally competitive information age requires students to pay rigorous attention to developing adequate life and career skills, such as: Flexibility and Adaptability Initiative and Self-Direction Social and Cross-Cultural Skills Productivity and Accountability Leadership and Responsibility

Smarter Balanced Assessment Smarter Balanced Assessments includes formative, interim, and summative assessment components in an effort to improve teaching and learning by providing information and tools for teachers and schools to help students succeed. Smarter Balanced assessments make use of computer adaptive technology. Computer adaptive testing adjusts to a student’s ability by basing the difficulty of future questions on previous answers, providing more accurate measurement of student achievement, particularly for high and low-performing students. Smarter Balanced assessments include short constructed responses, extended constructed responses, and performance tasks that allow students to complete an in-depth projects that demonstrate analytical skills and real-world problem solving.

Sample Mathematics Change Typical California Standards Test Type of Problem  Which of the following is an odd number? Example of CCSS Type of Item  Which of the following numbers does not belong? Explain the reason why? Explain your answer:  A) 70  B) 4  C) 45  D) None of the Above

Smarter Balanced Release Item (Purpose) Writing - School Day Grade: 4 WRITE/REVISE BRIEF TEXTS: Write or revise one or more paragraphs demonstrating ability to state opinions about topics or sources: set a context, organize ideas, develop supporting evidence/reasons and elaboration, or develop a conclusion appropriate to purpose and audience. This item asks students to provide relevant elaboration in order to revise a text.

Fourth Grade ELA Released Item (Task) The following is a rough draft of a paragraph that a student is writing for the school newspaper about why there should be a longer school day. The draft needs more details to support the student’s reasons for having a longer school day. Schools should have a longer school day for students. First, students could learn more about different subjects if the school day were longer. Also, students could get extra help from teachers. More hours in class each day would also mean more vacations scattered throughout the school year! Now look at the following daily schedule for a school that has switched to a longer school day.

Fourth Grade ELA Released Item (Task Continued) 8:00Morning Announcements 8:20Reading Language Arts 9:30Foreign Language 10:30Morning Recess 10:45Mathematics 11:45Lunch 12:45History 1:45Art or Music 2:15Afternoon Recess 2:45Science 3:30Homework Preparation 3:45After-School Tutoring or Sports

Fourth Grade ELA Released Item (Task Continued) Task: Revise the paragraph by adding details from the daily schedule that help support the reasons for having a longer school day.

Implementation Plan The District has adopted and implemented ELA materials aligned to CCSS for grades K-8. Common Core Implementation is the focus of the Sonoma Leadership Network this year. District and Site Administrators attended a CCSS training in the Spring of Teams from the primary, elementary and middle school have been attending training modules at NCOE.

Implementation Plan (cont.) The focus of staff development in Mathematics with David Chun and Fran Gibson is transitioning to the CCSS. Mathematics teachers attended the Asilomar Mathematics Conference in the fall, focused on CCSS. High School English teachers are scheduled to attend a CCSS conference next month.

Implementation Plan (cont.) Diane Lapp and Kelly Johnson have been working with staff on implementation of CCSS.
