Understanding Integers Lesson 8

1. Draw a number line from 0 to 10. Graph 4, 7.5 and on the number line. 2. Find the value of each expression. a) b)

Targets: Locate integers and their opposites on a number line. Find the absolute value of a number.

 Negative Numbers: Numbers less than 0.  Positive Numbers: Numbers greater than 0.  Opposites: Two numbers that are the same distance from zero, but on opposite sides of 0.  Integers: The set of all positive whole numbers, their opposites and zero.  Absolute Value: The distance a number is from 0 on a number line.

Find and graph the opposite of each integer. 2: The opposite of 2 is – 2. – 6: The opposite of – 6 is 6.

Find each absolute value. | – 4|  | – 4| = 4 |3|  |3| = 3

Write an integer to represent each situation. Death Valley, California is 282 feet below sea level.  – 282 The stock market gained 5 points yesterday. 55 Patrice withdrew $15 from her savings account.  – 15

1. Find the opposite of Graph the following numbers on a number line: 3, −6, 0 and −2 3. Find the value of |8|. 4. Write an integer to represent the following: The buried treasure was 7 feet below the ground.

Why is it important to have both positive and negative numbers to describe real-world situations?
