Presentation transcript:

Understanding Integers SWBAT represent integers and their relationship to zero. SWBAT recognize terminology that represents positive or negative numbers. SWBAT determine the meaning of absolute value.

Warm Up 1. Kelly fed her cat 7/8 cup of food per day. How much food does she feed her cat in one week, including the weekend? A) 1 3 4 B) 4 3 8 C) 5 5 6 D) 6 1 8 2. Stefani makes team shirts to sell at the basketball games. She puts one patch in the middle of each shirt. There are 3 patches in a pack and 5 shirts in a pack. What is the least number of team shirts Stefani can make without having any supplies left over? 3. Rick knows that 1 cup of glue weighs 1/18 pound. He has 2/3 pound of glue. How many cups does he have? 4. How many 1/3 pound serving are in 4 2 3 pounds of cheese?

Vocabulary Positive Integers are to the right of 0 on the number line. Negative Integers are to the left of 0 on the number line. Opposites are the same distance from 0, on opposite sides. Absolute Value is the distance a number is from 0. We represent it like this: −3 All opposites have the same absolute value.

Example -3 graph the integer, then graph the opposite

You try Graph the integer and its opposite on the number line. 1. 2 2. -4 3. -1 4. 7

Practicing with Terminology 1. If someone owes you $30 2. The Pacific Ocean is 11000 meters deep 3. The lowest point in the US is Death Valley which is located in California. It is 282 feet below sea level 4. The highest point in the US is Mt McKinley in Alaska. It is 2500 feet above sea level.

Absolute Value Absolute Value is the distance a number is from 0. Find the absolute value of each of the following: 1. |-9| 2. |8| 3. |-25| 4. |19|

Exit Ticket 1. Draw a number line and graph the integer 5 and its opposite. 2. Maria withdrew $20 from her checking account. Represent the withdrawal with an integer. 3. Which situation could be represented by the integer -2? A) a football team gains 2 yards on a play B) A city is 2 ft below sea level C) a student earns 2 bonus points on a quiz 4. What is the absolute value of -6? |-6|
