PINE LAKE TORNADO BY: RYLAN WALKER
Climate Factors That Caused the Storm The tornado resulted from a severe thunderstorm that developed on Friday evening in the foothills of Alberta and moved eastward. As it moved eastward it came to a area of low lying moisture that caused it to develop into a severe thunder cell.
Number of People Affected On July 14, 2000 at 7:00 PM an F3 tornado passed through the Green Acres Campground at Pine Lake in central Alberta, killing 12 people, and critically injuring 100 others. These people were camping tourists and locals.
Damage Caused The damage was caused in an area 800 to 1500 meters wide (1/2 mile-1 mile). The heaviest damage occurred in a 500 meter (3/8 mile) central corridor. A damage assessment suggests that winds in the central corridor were blowing at speeds up to 300 km/h (190 mph). Not only that but weather watchers reported hail the size of baseballs.
Important Information Pine Lake is an recreational area 25 km away from Red Deer Alberta, and 150 km away from Calgary it is fortunate that the storm did not reach Calgary. The tornado formed from a severe thunderstorm on the slopes of the Rockies. And moved rapidly eastward. It touched down 5 km away from the campground and was on the ground for 20 km.
