The Triune Brain

Triune Brain Theory Three brains in one Each layer / brain developed in response to evolutionary need Reptilian / Old brain Limbic / Mammalian or mid brain Cerebrum / Neo Cortex or new brain Each layer has separate functions but all three interact substantially

Reptilian Consists of the brain stem and cerebellum Related to physical survival Responsible for digestion, reproduction, circulation and breathing Executes fight or flight response Behaviours are automatic and highly resistant to change

The Limbic System Houses primary centres of emotion Includes amygdala which comes into play in situations that arouse feelings of fear, pity, anger or disgust

Neocortex Makes language possible Centre of logical and rational thinking Allows us to see ahead and plan for the future Enables voluntary movement Processes sensory information
