Measure Area MAFS.3.MD.3.5b, MAFS.3.MD.3.6

What is the area of the shape below?

We learned yesterday that to find AREA you count the UNIT SQUARES inside a shape

How can I find the area of this rectangle? What if we put unit squares inside the shape to measure area? This square is ONE square inch. I can use this to measure area. Then, count the unit squares. There are 21 unit squares, or 21 square inches in the rectangle. 1 inch

Can I find the area of the rectangle this way? Why not? When finding the area of any shape you cannot have any GAPS or OVERLAPS of unit squares.

Can I find the area of the rectangle this way? Why not? There are no GAPS or OVERLAPS! When finding the area of any shape the unit squares have to be the SAME SIZE.

Your Turn Estimate the area of each shape first. Then, use square tiles to find the area of each shape. Write your estimate and the actual area inside each shape.

Go Math! Exercises Complete #6-10 on page 452 for more practice.

Closing How can you find the area of a shape? Using unit squares How do the unit squares have to be arranged? Without any gaps or overlaps Also, the unit squares all have to be the same size

Exit Ticket 1.What is the area of a square unit that has sides measuring 1 inch(like the ones you used today)? 2.The drawing below represents the floor of a kitchen. If each tile on the floor is one square foot, how many square feet is the kitchen? 3.Draw a different shaped figure that has the SAME area as the figure below.
