 Ed Alleyne-Johnson is a British electric violinist and prolific busker. He has been busking since he was a Fine Art student at Oxford University in the early 1980s. He uses an electric violin he carved with a kitchen knife, a custom pedalboard, and an amplifier he modified to run off rechargeable batteries. This setup has enabled him to perform on the street in almost every major city in Europe, and across the United States and Canada.

 He was a member of the English post- punk/alternative rock band New Model Army recording and touring with them for five years, with several concerts in Germany in over 200 concerts worldwide.

Ed tells about his life on his web-site  “I was born in 1959 just around the corner from Penny Lane, and grew up beneath Liverpool’s blue suburban skies, with my parents, Brian & Olive, (both school- teachers), and my young sisters, Catherine & Margaret.”

“I first started busking while still a student, hitch-hiking round Europe with some friends from college. Since my bass guitar was too big and heavy to hitch-hike with, I dusted off my Grandpa’s old violin, sprayed it metallic purple and stuck a Barcus-Berry pick-up on the bridge. It was my first taste of real freedom and life on the road, and I loved it!”
