Jesus Dies on the Cross Luke 23:44 – 56 Presented by Bob DeWaay June 6, 2010

Luke 23:44, 45 It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour, because the sun was obscured; and the veil of the temple was torn in two. Jesus’ death creates access to God

Luke 23:46 And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.” Having said this, He breathed His last. The Creator of the universe dies for our sins

A Gentile gives glory to God Luke 23:47 Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he began praising God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent.”

“Praising God” in Luke/Acts Luke 1:64 – Zacharias praises God Luke 2:13 – the heavenly host praise God Luke 2:20 – the shepherds praise God Luke 18:43 – the people praise God Luke 19:37 – the disciples praise God Luke 23:47– the centurion praises God Luke 24:53 – the disciples praise God Acts 2:47 – the new Christians praise God Acts 3:8, 9 – a healed lame man praises God

The “crowds” who had turned against Jesus now mourn His death Luke 23:48 And all the crowds who came together for this spectacle, when they observed what had happened, began to return, beating their breasts.

Luke 23:49 And all His acquaintances and the women who accompanied Him from Galilee were standing at a distance, seeing these things. At this point there is distance between the disciples and the Lord

Luke 23: And a man named Joseph, who was a member of the Council, a good and righteous man (he had not consented to their plan and action), a man from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who was waiting for the kingdom of God; this man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Joseph was a man of faith

Luke 23:53, 54 And he took it down and wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid Him in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever lain. It was the preparation day, and the Sabbath was about to begin. This was a tomb he owned

Luke 23:55, 56 Now the women who had come with Him out of Galilee followed, and saw the tomb and how His body was laid. Then they returned and prepared spices and perfumes. And on the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment. Women play an important role in Luke

Applications and Implications 1) The torn veil signifies access for all to God’s saving grace 2) Jesus is the sinless Lamb of God who takes away sins 3) We need to join Joseph of Arimathea and others in “waiting for the kingdom of God”

Hebrews 6:19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil, 1) The torn veil signifies access for all to God’s saving grace

Hebrews 9:11, 12 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come, He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation; and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. 1) The torn veil signifies access for all to God’s saving grace

Hebrews 7:25 (NKJV) Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. 1) The torn veil signifies access for all to God’s saving grace

2) Jesus is the sinless Lamb of God who takes away sins John 1:29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”

2) Jesus is the sinless Lamb of God who takes away sins Revelation 5:12b, 13 “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing.” And every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all things in them, I heard saying, “To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever.”

3) We need to join Joseph of Arimathea and others in “waiting for the kingdom of God” Luke 2:25 And there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

3) We need to join Joseph of Arimathea and others in “waiting for the kingdom of God” Acts 28:23 When they had set a day for Paul, they came to him at his lodging in large numbers; and he was explaining to them by solemnly testifying about the kingdom of God and trying to persuade them concerning Jesus, from both the Law of Moses and from the Prophets, from morning until evening.

3) We need to join Joseph of Arimathea and others in “waiting for the kingdom of God” 2Timothy 4:1, 2 I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.
