FBI BAU Special Agent

School and training The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) requires a four-year college degree in any major. Most FBI agents majored in Psychology, Political Science, Journalism, and Criminal Justice. Once in the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU), there is a training process that includes classroom training and working with and experienced BAU agent for 2-3 years.

Salary The salary of an FBI BAU agent depends on the General Schedule (GS) of the agent. FBI BAU agents GS pay grade ranges from GS-10 ($45,771- 59,505) up to GS-13 ($71,674-93,175) If the agent is a designated supervisor or executive they can make up to GS-14 ($84,697-110,104) or GS-15 ($99,628- 129,517)

Working Hours Most FBI BAU Special Agents work around 50 hours a week. The Special Agents hours come in shifts on a daily basis but they also work when they are assigned an assignment which can be at any point of the day.

Lifestyle The average special agent making a GS-10 to GS-13 pay grade will have a normal lifestyle making an average income. Special Agents making a GS-14 or GS-15 pay grade will have a more wealthy lifestyle, making a higher income than most people.

Location Special Agents are constantly traveling with their assignments. The headquarters for FBI BAU Special Agents is based in Quantico, Virginia.

Career Cluster An FBI BAU Special Agent falls under the Law and Public Safety career cluster. On the worksheet I scored high in protective and humanitarian which are good foundational skills.

10 Characteristics Values: My values match those of a Special Agents because I believe in bringing justice to the right side. Tasks and responsibilities: In the BAU agents are working hard every day, which is something I admire and wish to do. Working with data-people-things: BAU agents focus prominently on data people and things to assess the criminal. Work Environment: BAU agents work in places all over the country for long periods of time, hey also have to be around lots of new people for every assignment. I prefer this scenario over just working by myself in an office. Working Hours: BAU Agents work around 50 hours a week and have assignments given to them at different times of the day, the are always working.

10 Characteristics Continued Aptitudes and Abilities: BAU agents have to acquire skills with mental knowledge and piecing information together to make a profile for a criminal. I don’t have those abilities but I have the patience to acquire those abilities over time. Education and Training: BAU agents have to have at least 4 years of college and major in any field, training is also very long and hard which is something I am willing to be apart of. Salary and Benefits: The salary of an agent ranges from around $45,000- 130,000 which is a normal to wealthy income. FBI agents receive health and life insurance programs, vacation and sick pay, and a full retirement plan. Career Outlook: Criminals are always arising and crime is always happening and I don’t think that will change in the next 10 years. International Career Outlook: I believe FBI Agents will have to travel internationally more frequently within the upcoming years due to the intermingling of crimes across borders.

Teaching

School and Training Teachers must have at least a Bachelors degree. To become a teacher you have to do student teaching. There are two different types of student teaching: Pre-Student teaching: observe the class(es) and teach a few lessons Student teaching: teaching the class(es) as the main teacher.

Salary The starting salary for a teaching in Michigan is around $35,901 The average salary for a teacher in Michigan is around $62,631

Working Hours Teachers work hands on with their students usually 7 hours a day for 5 days a week. Teachers also spend their non school time, putting all their work together, grading their students work and occasionally some teachers even go back to school to receive a higher degree (masters or doctorate)

Lifestyle Teachers usually live an average lifestyle, due to their average income.

Career Cluster A teachers career cluster falls under Education and Training From the worksheet I scored well in artistic and humanitarian which I believe fits relatively well with teaching.

10 Characteristics Values: Teachers value educating their students Tasks and Responsibilities: Teachers have to prepare and teach the work required by the state. Working with Data-People-Things: Teachers are always working with students or other teachers in order to progress in their work. Work Environment: Teachers work in a classroom amongst students. Working Hours: Teachers don’t have flextime, they work in shifts. Aptitudes and Abilities: Teachers have to acquire patience and speaking skills. Education and Training: Teachers must have at least a Bachelors degree and complete student teaching.

10 Characteristics Continued Salary and Benefits: Teachers may have but aren’t limited to: medical, dental and vision care, vacations, life insurance and a retirement plan. Career Outlook: Teachers have been around for a long time and I believe they’ll still be around in ten years. International Career Outlook: Teachers are already all around the world so I believe teaching will stay within their own restrictions.

Explanation FBI BAU Special Agent -Working as an FBI BAU Special Agent has always intrigued me. I find it ideal to become a Special Agent because of the dedication put into every case and the initiative to save lives. I strive to have a career in which I give back and I help other people. I could accomplish these goals by becoming a Special Agent in the BAU. Teaching -I chose teaching because I enjoy helping people move forward and helping people improve their education. Education is vital to contribute to the community and to make a living. I enjoy the thought of being the reason someone has furthered their education and made something of themselves because of what I have taught them.
