The musical alphabet The musical alphabet consists of 7 letters: A, B, C, D, E, F, G These notes are also called naturals. These notes are repeated on different musical instruments and will produce higher and lower sounds. The notes on the keyboard are named based on their location to the black keys.

MUSICAL TERMS

What is a musical scale? a musical scale is a series of notes in a specific, repeated order. Major and minor scales are the two most common types, and they have the following attributes: – They're eight notes long. – The top and bottom notes are an octave apart, so they have the same name. – The series follows a stepwise pattern up and down, and the name of each note in the scale follows the alphabet up and down.

Major scale A scale is a selection of certain notes within an octave. The major scale is constructed with this formula. W's represent whole steps and H's represent half steps. Root note-W-W-H-W-W-W-H Or Tonic-W-W-H-W-W-W-H

Octave An octave is made up of two notes that are 8 notes away from each other. E.g. C to C, E to E, F to F, A to A etc.

Semitone/ Half Step This is the shortest distance between two notes. C to C#, F to F# also E to F, B to C. There are no other notes between a semitones.

Tones/ Whole steps A tone is made up of two semitones/ half steps. A tone always has one note that is between it.

Building Major scales You can build any scale starting on any root note simply by applying the correct scale pattern, or combination of whole (W) and half (H) steps. Major scale: Tonic-W-W-H-W-W-W-H
