10-1 MAVEN IPSR October 30,31, 2012 Particles and Fields Package Pre-Ship Review October 30,31, : EMC Dave Curtis Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) Mission

10-2 MAVEN IPSR October 30,31, 2012 EMC Requirements & Plans ERD calls out the testing required at the package level as tailored for MAVEN: –Bonding & Isolation –In-rush –CE01, CE03 –CS101, CS115 –RE102 –RS103 Test Plan called out by MAVEN_PFP_TP_028 –Susceptibility pass/fail criteria per MAVEN_PF_SYS_041 –Bonding & Isolation, Inrush done at SSL, the rest at METLabs –The entire package was tested together –Instruments bagged in EMC-transparent material

10-3 MAVEN IPSR October 30,31, 2012 Pass/Fail Criteria Based on meeting L1 requirements MAG: AC < 0.1nT, DC <1nT above facility background LPW: > 20dB above LPW noise floor –excluding RS < 4MHz, since that is our measurement band EUV: –Channel A – 6 LSBs (Based on 16 bit number) –Channel B – 60 LSBs (Based on 16 Bit number) –Channel C – 216 LSBs (Based on 16 Bit number) –Channel D – 6 LSBs (Based on 16 Bit number) SEP: Total counts integrated above 50 keV not to exceed 20 c/s SWEA: Background Counts (summed over all anodes) < 90c/s SWIA: Total counts integrated over all anodes exceeding 20 in any P1 energy bin STATIC: –Width and location of test pulser mass peaks < 20 units off nominal –TIMEA/-B/-C/-D and TIMERST reads 0xd6 +/-1. –StopNoStart, Mass & Anode reject rates <1000/4s PFDPU: Crash, Error, Housekeeping out of range

10-4 MAVEN IPSR October 30,31, 2012 CE01,03 Narrowband test on each power service –Extended to 100MHz –Except heaters, actuators (but including MAG heater) –Power, return, and common mode, plus structure current

10-5 MAVEN IPSR October 30,31, 2012 CS101, CS115 CS101 applied to each power service –30Hz – 150KHz CS115 applied to each power harness –Except passive heaters

10-6 MAVEN IPSR October 30,31, 2012 RE102 14kHz to 10GHz LPW, Electra, Telecom notches

10-7 MAVEN IPSR October 30,31, 2012 RS103 14kHz to 10GHz 2V/m plus Electra, X-band Com Also survive C-band radars

10-8 MAVEN IPSR October 30,31, 2012

10-9 MAVEN IPSR October 30,31, 2012 Results Summary Test report: –MAVEN_PF_TP_028 as-run proc –EMCS35856 Facility report All tests passed with a few exceptions noted in the following charts Post-EMC CPT passed

10-10 MAVEN IPSR October 30,31, 2012 Bonding Exceedance Exceedance in bonding and isolation (connector to chassis), document in PFR107, waiver approved by EMWG and Project CCR0602 Requirements ERD534: –Connectors shall be electrically bonded to the component chassis via the connector mounting surface not to exceed 2.5 mOhms. Measurements between mated connector backshells and instrument chassis mostly met this requirement with a few exceptions. –By far the largest exception was the LPW boom unit connectors which measured up to 28 mohm. This was due to the unusual grounding of the boom unit, resulting in the connector backshell being routed to chassis ground via a wire.

10-11 MAVEN IPSR October 30,31, 2012 Conducted Emissions Exceedance Exceedance in conducted emissions, documented in PFR108, waiver approved by EMWG and Project CCR0626 In Review 60Hz harmonics, see in ambient

10-12 MAVEN IPSR October 30,31, 2012 MAG Heater Exceedance Exceedance in MAG heater power service conducted emissions documented in PFR109 and conducted susceptibility, documented in PFR111. Susceptible to 100mV RMS at 96kHz; adds noise to MAG measurement, can’t meet level 1 science requirements Addressed by the addition of a filter. Breadboard test shows CE passes, CS susceptibility up to ~500mV RMS Re-test with FM filters PENDING

10-13 MAVEN IPSR October 30,31, 2012 Actuator Service Conducted Susceptibility (SEP) Exceedance in Actuator power service conducted susceptibility (SEP) documented in PFR110, waiver approved by EMWG and Project CCR613 Susceptibility threshold at 150kHz, just below 1VRMS requirement. –Would cause SEP detector noise above acceptable levels (adds background to low energies, impacts Level 1 science)

10-14 MAVEN IPSR October 30,31, 2012 Radiated Emissions Exceedance in Radiated Emissions in Electra band ( MHz). Documented in PFR112, approved by EMWG and Project CCR0614 See Power Converter harmonics which go away when you use a shielded power harness See 2MHz harmonics which go away when LPW is switched off See a single line at 402.6MHz –24 th harmonic of PFDPU processor clock, crystal-controlled PFDPU & LPW are far away from Electra. Analysis indicates Electra will not see the noise – verify at spacecraft level If Electra does see PFP noise, we can shut off PFP during relay passes

10-15 MAVEN IPSR October 30,31, 2012 Radiated Emissions Unshielded power harness Shielded power harness LPW Off

10-16 MAVEN IPSR October 30,31, 2012 Radiated Susceptibility Exceedance in Radiated Susceptibility in Electra Transmit Band (LPW). Documented in PFR113, approved by EMWG and Project CCR0615 LPW sees noise from Electra transmit 26V/m –Nothing at 2V/m –We see the 1kHz AM signal; Electra transmitter is not AM Power level at LPW preamps should be below the sensitivity level If we do see noise during Relay passes, not a science hit (Relay orbits are not required to make science measurements)
