Tundra Biome facts Tundra Biomes are cold throughout the year. In summertime, the sun shines 24 hours a day, but it is still cold. Summer only lasts 6-10 weeks. Summer can cause the permafrost to melt, which creates bogs full of stinging insects. The tundra has 6-10 inches of rain a year. It is one of the driest Biomes.

More Tundra Biome facts. In the long winter months, it is extremely cold, around -20 or -30 degrees Fahrenheit. Permafrost, which is permanently frozen soil, prevents tree growth. The tundra climate is located in most of Greenland, parts of Alaska and northern Canada and Russia. The Tundra is the simplest Biome.

Tundra Plants The plants in the Tundra include shrubs, lichens, mosses and small trees. Surprisingly, there are more than 1700 different plant species. Plants do not have deep root systems. There are 400 types of flowers in the growing season. There are willows in some parts of the tundra, but they are only 3 inches high.

Tundra Animal Facts Animals include the Arctic Fox, Caribou, Ermine, Grizzly Bear, Harlequin Duck, Musk Ox, Polar Bear and Snowy Owl. Reindeer and Caribou are actually the same species but with different names. Animals that have fur in the Tundra change to darker colors in the summer and brighter during winter. The bear and oxen species in the Tundra are endangered.
