Non-Negotiables  As a grade level/building decide what you are not willing to “deal with” regarding student work.  Team members agree and stick to a list of 3-5 items so that students know the expectations never change no matter the class or teacher

Non-Negotiable 1. Answers are restated and written in complete sentences. 2. Use capital letters at the beginning of each sentence and every proper noun. 3. Pronouns are not used to start an answer 4. I must be able to read your writing.

Table-Top Twitter  A great strategy for students to interact with each other.  All students participate at the same time and each student is able to “voice” their thoughts and opinions. All students are engaged.  On a large piece of paper tape an image, quote, paragraph, reading selection, etc.  Each student in the team has a different colored pencil or marker.  Discuss “twitter” and how to “ tweet.”  Set a timer and remind students: writing is right, but talking is not allowed.  Students move around the table writing comments or responding to comments already written.  Great way to build background knowledge. Layering The Text Layering the text is a collection of resources, focused on one topic, from different genres, media, and levels of reading difficulty that are designed to be supportive of the learning of readers with a range of experiences and interests. Features of effective text sets:  grow in complexity; consideration given to order of piece  offer various opinions - both sides  include several reading level  feature a range of genres—posters, poetry, ads, interviews, blogs, etc purposeful choice of infographic as appropriate

Visual Thinking Strategies VTS is a simple way in which teachers and schools can provide students with key behaviors sought by Common Core Standards: thinking skills that become habitual and transfer from lesson to lesson, content to content, oral and written language literacy, visual literacy, and collaborative interactions among peers. In VTS discussions teachers support student growth by facilitating discussions of carefully selected works of visual art for any content.   Teachers are asked to use three open-ended questions:   What's going on in this picture?   What do you see that makes you say that?   What more can we find?
