Basic MLA Formatting Giving Credit Where Credit is Due

What is MLA? MLA is… An acronym for Modern Language Association The preferred method of citation for English and other humanities courses (languages, art, etc.) A way to emphasize the authorship of a cited source In other words, MLA formatting is a way to show where our ideas and evidence come from.

MLA Formatting dictates… Your font/size choices (Times New Roman, 12) Your heading format Your citation format (in-text) The way you write numbers and contractions The way you list your references at the end of your writing (works cited page, reverse indentation)

Focus: Works Cited Page Book: Last name, First name. Title of Book. City of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Medium of Publication. More than one author: 2 : list both author’s names; only the first one is in reverse 3+ : list only the first author’s name followed by “et. al”

Focus: Works Cited Page Periodical (Magazines and Newspapers) Author(s). "Title of Article." Title of Periodical Day Month Year: pages. Medium of publication. **Follow the same rules for names as for books!

Focus: Works Cited Page Online/Electronic Sources Editor, author, or compiler name (if available). Name of Site. Version number. Name of institution/organization affiliated with the site (sponsor or publisher), date of resource creation (if available). Medium of publication. Date of access.
