The region experienced rapid economic growth during the 1980’s and 1990’s.

Some of the countries, like Brunei, have large oil and natural gas reserves. Other countries, like Singapore, are major industrial and trade centers.

Wet rice cultivation is the most common form of agriculture. Paddies are constructed with dikes or on terraces, and erosion is very limited.

Tourism is a big industry. Many people come to visit beautiful places like Bali.

Major cities in the region include: Singapore

Manila in the Philippines

Jakarta in Indonesia

The challenges facing the region are The struggle for democratic freedoms
