Review of Essay Structure Intro Body Paragraphs “Claim / Data / Warrant” Conclusion

Intro Hook – Get your readers attention! Background info. – Title, author, genre and necessary context Thesis Statement – Most IMPORTANT sentence in of your paper

The Thesis Statement Usually 1 sentence that directly answers the prompt Presents a clear, provable opinion Provides a roadmap for the paper (think of your claims)

Body Paragraphs  Regular CDWDWCS  Must support thesis  Make the paper cohesive with transitions Claim Data #1 (quote) Warrant (2-3 sentences) Data #2 (Quote) Warrant (2-3 sentences) Concluding/Transition sentence

What is a claim ? The first sentence of your body paragraphs A clear, focused, precise opinion that can be proven with concrete details--supports your thesis!

How do you prove that claim? Data is the evidence from the piece of literature that supports or proves the claim. Data is a quoted passage [or passages] from the literary piece which must be cited (aka documented).

Setting up quotes Do not start a sentence with a quote unless the sentence before leads into it and is punctuated with a colon: How to lead into the quote: Introduce your quotes with context so your reader understands what the quote means. -What is happening at this point in the story? -Is someone speaking? -Where are the characters?

Warrant The explanation of how and why the data supports or justifies the claim The analysis and interpretation or reflection about the data in terms of how it supports your claim

Conclusion Paragraph Rephrase the thesis. Briefly review what you just proved. Implication of argument: WHY does your paper matter? Striking Statement-how does your argument apply to the reader/world?
