MOBILE DEVICES A mobile device is a small computing device, typically small enough to be handheld, having a display screen with touch input and/or a miniature keyboard and weighing less than 2 pounds (0.91 kg).

WHEN AND WHERE ARE MOBILE DEVICES USED?  Internet access.  Digitizing notes.  Sending and receiving invoices.  Voice calls, video calls.  Scanning barcodes and etc.

EVOLUTION OF LAPTOPS The first laptop computer-Osborne 1 was introduced in The second laptop computer-Epson HX-20 was introduced in And few laptops like IBM 5155, Mac portable etc were introduced. Laptops like Macbook pro have many advanced features.

BASIC FUNCTIONALITIES Portability Power consumption Computing Ability Connectivity Media applications like apps, games

TYPES OF MOBILE DEVICES  MOBILE COMPUTERS  Laptops and Netbooks (Laptop was launched in 1983 as Gavilan SC, Netbooks were first launched in 2007 as Asus Eee PC)  Smart Phones and Tablets (Tablets were launched by AT&T in 1991,called as EO Personal Communicator while Smart phones were commercially available since 21 st century)  Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) (Released in 1984 by Psion, The Organizer)

 Smart Watches (Examples: Apple Watch, Android Wear)  Smart Glasses (Example: Google Glass)  Pedometers (Example: Nike+)  HANDHELD GAMING CONSOLES  Wearable Computers

 DIGITAL CAMERAS (First electronic camera was invented in 1975 at Eastman Kodak by Steve Sasson)  STORAGE DEVICES  Flash Cards and Flash Drives  External Storage Drives

 SMART CARDS (First mass usage was as a telephone card in 1983 )  ROBOTS (Autonomous and Semi-Autonomous )

DEPENDENCIES  Cost  Size  Power consumption  Reliability  User-friendliness

TECHNOLOGY AND MARKET UPDATES Advances in reducing size Moore’s Law. Microprocessors having width or sizes in nanometers. Advances in processing power and computing ability Processor frequencies are around GHz level. Focus on power consumption and heat generation. Focus on multi-core chips instead of higher number of transistors. Processors that can process higher number of bits to handle larger chunks of data.

TECHNOLOGY AND MARKET UPDATES Advances in communication technologies. Advent of 4G LTE and 5G technologies. Introduction of ac wireless technologies ad in pipeline. Advances in storage options. Solid State Drives Wireless storage options. USB 3.0 and high performance memory cards

TECHNOLOGY AND MARKET UPDATES Advances in operating systems Focus on multi-device functionality. Focus on getting the best deal from available hardware by optimizing OS. Security. Advances in displays and resolutions Focus on more pixels per inch Organic LED’s

CONCLUSION AND SUMMARY Mobile devices are an important part of everyday life. Technologies are continuing to evolve at a rapid pace. Development primarily focused on improving end user experiences and device functionality. The next generation of mobile devices to focus on Internet of Things.
