Vocabulary Observation: Using the five senses of sight, sound, taste, smell, and touch to learn or collect information about an object. Observations are based on fact. Inferring – Making judgments or interpreting events based on observations. An educated guess based on the observations you have made, and re-occurring patterns.

Qualitative Observation: Characteristics you can observe about an object using your five senses. Think quality: what qualities does it have? Color, shape, texture. Quantitative Observation: Characteristics of an object made through measurements. (How many, length, height, width, mass, etc) Think Quantity = how much, numbers.

Indicate if each example is a qualitative or quantitative observation. 1.The beaker held 250 ml of blue liquid 2.The sweater felt soft 3.There was 2.5 cm of rain in the rain gage. 4.The candy tasted sweet. 5.There are four groups of five people. 6.The magnet is in the shape of a rectangle. 7.The water was 20 degrees Celsius. 8.The ruler is shorter than the meter stick. 9.The girl has red hair. 10.The book was 20 cm in length.
