Mixtures and Solutions Review

Separating Mixtures A __________ combines two or more materials without changing them. mixture A __________ forms when a material dissolves in a liquid and cannot be separated with a filter. solution

Separating Mixtures Vocabulary A substance that dissolves in water. Solute A substance that dissolves a solute. Solvent The process of one material disperses uniformly into another. Dissolving Capable of being dissolved. Soluble

Separating Mixtures How can mixtures be separated? Using filters or screens. In class we used filters and screens to separate powder and pebbles. How can solutions be separated? Evaporation: When water turns into a gas and appears to disappear it leaves behind the dissolved solid in the form of crystals.

Reaching Saturation A solution is saturated when ... As much solid material as possible has dissolved in the liquid. In class we dissolved salt and citric acid in water. Which one is the most soluble? Citric acid because 45-65 grams dissolves campared to 10-15 grams for salt.

Concentration The amount of substance in a mixture is … - its concentration The more material dissolved in a liquid the more or less concentrated it is. MORE You must compare equal volumes of two liquids to see which one is more concentrated. What can you do to dilute a solution? Add more liquid

Which is more concentrated? Solution 1: 50 ml of water and 2 spoons of salt. Solution 2: 150 ml of water and 5 spoons of salt. Solution 3: 200 ml of water and 8 spoons of salt. Answer: Solution 1 and 3 have the same concentration. Solution 2 is less concentrated.

Fizz Quiz When a change results from mixing two or more materials, that change is called a … Chemical reaction How do you know a chemical reaction has taken place? Change in temperature Gas formation A precipitate is form (A new material)
