Session 2 Gathering Evidence for Mathematics

Aims To consider how evidence could be gathered for Ma1 – Using and Applying in Mathematics. Further familiarisation with the process of levelling pupils’ work in mathematics. To provide opportunities for moderation of levelled work in mathematics.

Making Assessments of Ma1 Standards File for Daniel (Low Level 3) APP Guidelines Using and Applying What judgements can you make about Daniel’s attainment in Ma1? What more information would you want in order to provide evidence for your judgements?

Making Assessments of Ma1 Look at Daniel’s follow-up work and the teacher notes. What could you add to your assessment of his attainment in Ma1?

Making Assessments in Ma1 – Two from four Select one person to be the teacher and 2-3 people to act as the pupils. The ‘pupils’ will carry out the activity while the teacher notes which areas of Ma1 could be assessed. The teacher has additional notes which s/he can use to intervene in the activity if s/he wishes After completing the activity discuss as a group what was observed and what the next steps might be in order to gather more evidence for Ma1.

Making Assessments in Ma1- Communicating Trevor - Year 1 class Primary and Nursery School in an urban area with high deprivation. Filmed in November 2007 What evidence could you gather for Ma1 from this guided group activity? What might the next steps be?

Making and Moderating Assessments in Mathematics Use the mathematics flow chart to level the work for your chosen pupil in one area of mathematics. Moderate the work for your chosen pupil within your own school group. Moderate the work for your chosen pupil with colleagues from another school.

Feedback What was particularly useful? What are the implications for practice in school? What are the next steps? Any questions?
