How to do a word problem  Step 1: Read it.  Step 2: Underline any key words  More, left, all together, sum, total, difference.  Step 3: Circle any numbers.  Step 4: Write an equation using the parts you circled and underlined.

Example  Alice needed to build some birdhouses. She made 342 on Monday and 62 Wednesday. How many bird houses did she build in all?  What do we need to mark?  What strategy would you use?

Work it out

Group work  Listen to the groups that you will be put in  Go to the center  Rotate when told to  Record your work on a piece of paper.  Number the problems that you are working on  Have your name on your paper

Problem 1  If Mrs. Gere wanted to make Halloween bags for everyone in the class she would need two types of candy. If there was a total of 500 Snickers and 386 Skittles used, how many pieces of candy were used all together?

Answer to problem 1  886 pieces of candy  Mark your answer right or wrong  Compare with your group to see what mistake you could have made

Problem 2  There are 964 guppies in a fish tank and 103 snails. What is the total number of animals in the tank?

Problem 3  Jose’ needs to read 700 more pages to make his AR goal on time. Last week he read 354 pages and this week he will read 287 pages. Will he have read enough pages to meet his goal?

Answer 3  No he read only 641 pages

Problem 4  This next nine weeks Jose’ changed his reading plan. He still needs to read 700 pages. However, this time he read 461 pages and 277 pages. Does he have enough this time?

Answer 4  Yes he read 738

Problem 5  There are 253 balls, 192 yoyos, and 731 shoes in a box. How many toys are in the box?

Problem 6  Mrs. Gere is a vegetarian which means she does not eat meat. If she could eat all the food she wanted, how many sandwiches could she eat if there were: 23 grilled cheeses, 40 tuna sandwiches, 56 cucumber sandwiches, 19 BLTs, and 33 mushroom sandwiches?

Answer 6  112 sandwiches  And I would be sick

Problem 7  Jake is making cookies for a bake sale. He made 200 vanilla cookies, 142 chocolate chip cookies, and 531 peanut butter cookies. How many cookies did he make in all?

Answer 7  873 cookies!

Problem 8  Lee wants to be tall when he grows up. Right now he is 123 cm tall. He has done the math and thinks he can grow another 58 cm so he can be 179 cm tall. Did he do his math right? If not how tall would he be if he grew 58 cm?

Answer 8  No  181 cm tall
